Harris County Community Center No. 6

Johnston provided full architectural and engineering services on this project.

Johnston led the fully integrated design efforts for this 20,000 SF community center from conceptual programming through final occupancy. The building ammenities include multi-purpose rooms, a catering kitchen, conference spaces, library and activity rooms.

In an effort to promote sustainable building and greener practices, the community center was designed in accordance with USGBC LEED standards. As part of the LEED design, the site irrigation was developed to enable future connection to the gray water system, helping the city conserve water.

Adding to the green initiative, Johnston's design incorporated planning for future connections to hike and bike trails in the Langham Creek watershed, allowing for more flexible use of the both the community center and the trails. Also with future growth in mind, the electrical design for the center included accommodations for additional connections to a stand-by generator so that the community center could be used as a shelter during weather events.

“The Johnston team used inexpensive recycled materials to save on cost, but the delivery and uses of the materials throughout the facility make the center feel and look upscale. Due to the great planning and construction drawings the project is ahead of schedule.”
